Faint Signs of Uptick in China Trade
New York Times
That anecdotal evidence of some uptick in trade came as a senior Chinese government economic forecaster Fan Jianping said the economy had grown at an annual pace of “around 6 percent” in the first quarter. That would be the slowest pace since quarterly records began in 1992 indicating that strong consumer spending and heavy government investments had failed to offset a nose dive in exports. The figure given by Mr. Fan — the official statistic is to be released Thursday — was roughly in line with economists’ expectations.

China’s black population is tiny and attitudes remain relatively unsophisticated. ne predominately African suburb in the southern city of Guangzhou is cheerfully referred to as “Chocolate City”. In the run-up to last year’s lympic Games in Beijing large numbers of blacks were rounded up by police on suspicion of being drug dealers. However the black population is growing rapidly. Since 2003 when China started pouring investments into Africa there has been a significant movement of Africans in the opposite direction. The call was made on Wednesday by the Southern Metropolitan Daily a popular and outspoken tabloid published in the southern city of Guangzhou. "If we let the names of the dead lie buried human rights can have no place of trust" the paper said in an editorial. The call comes at a sensitive time a month before the first anniversary of the May 12 quake across southwest China that killed 80000 or more people mostly in Sichuan province. Volunteers led by Beijing artist Ai Weiwei have sought to compile a list of thousands of children killed in schools that parents said were shoddily built and Ai has spoken of official harassment. Police in Sichuan province recently detained writer Tan Zuoren who was trying to make a list of children killed.
